A Jacksonville church-sponsored project is turning shoes into water.

Salem Lutheran Church has begun its third year of receiving new and “gently used” shoes for the Shoeman Water Projects.

Shoeman Water Projects is a ministry of Eagle Wing Ministries, a non-profit charity based in Fenton, Mo., that works to alleviate as much human suffering as possible.

Salem Lutheran Church’s group Salem Connects received 2,828 pairs of shoes during its January-February 2011 shoe drive — 250 more pairs than in 2010.

The Salem group hopes to receive 3,000 pairs of shoes in this year’s drive, according to project coordinator Diann Brechbuhl.

“People have been very generous when I have asked if they would consider being a drop-off location,” Brechbuhl said. “As a result, we have eight new drop-off locations this year, which is totally awesome.”

She said the shoes are graded by quality — the better the quality the more money that goes to the Shoeman Water Projects.
